Betty and Barney Hill Abduction

September 19-20, 1961 — White Mountains, New Hampshire, USA

The Journey

On the night of September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving south on Route 3 through the White Mountains of New Hampshire when they observed a bright light in the sky that appeared to follow their vehicle. Through binoculars, Barney observed a large, disc-shaped craft with a row of windows through which he could see humanoid figures.

Missing Time

The Hills arrived home approximately two hours later than expected, with no memory of a roughly 35-mile stretch of their journey. Betty's dress was torn and covered in a mysterious pink powder. Barney's shoes were scuffed as if he had been dragged. The car's trunk had a series of shiny, circular spots that caused a compass needle to spin erratically.

Hypnotic Regression

Under separate hypnotic regression sessions conducted by Dr. Benjamin Simon in 1964, both Betty and Barney independently described being taken aboard a craft and subjected to medical examinations by beings matching the Grey alien description. Their accounts were remarkably consistent with each other despite being given separately.

The Star Map

Under hypnosis, Betty described being shown a three-dimensional star map by the beings. She later drew the map from memory. In 1968, amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish identified the map as depicting the Zeta Reticuli star system as viewed from a specific vantage point, a correlation that Betty could not have fabricated with the astronomical knowledge available in 1961.
