Anunnaki
Also known as: Those Who From Heaven Came, Nephilim
Overview
The Anunnaki are among the oldest documented non-human intelligences in human records. Originating from ancient Sumerian texts dating back to approximately 4,500 BCE, they are described as a group of deities who came from the sky to Earth. The word "Anunnaki" translates roughly to "those who from heaven to Earth came," suggesting an extraterrestrial origin that predates modern UFO discourse by millennia.
Sumerian Records
The ancient Sumerians, who created one of the first known civilizations in Mesopotamia, left extensive records describing the Anunnaki in cuneiform tablets. These texts describe beings who arrived on Earth, established cities, created humans through genetic manipulation of existing hominids, and taught humanity agriculture, mathematics, astronomy, and governance. Key texts include the Enuma Elish (creation epic) and the Atra-Hasis (flood narrative).
Zecharia Sitchin's Research
Author and researcher Zecharia Sitchin spent decades translating Sumerian texts and proposed that the Anunnaki were extraterrestrial beings from a planet called Nibiru. His "Earth Chronicles" series (1976-2010) argues that the Anunnaki genetically engineered Homo sapiens by combining their DNA with that of Homo erectus to create a worker species for gold mining operations.
Cross-Cultural Evidence
Similar accounts of powerful sky beings who created or modified humanity appear in numerous ancient traditions: the Nephilim of Hebrew texts, the Viracocha of Incan mythology, the Nommo of Dogon tradition, and the sky ancestors of Aboriginal Australian Dreamtime. This global pattern suggests either a shared experience or a common ancestral memory of contact with advanced beings.
