Westall UFO Encounter

April 6, 1966 — Westall, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The Event

At approximately 11:00 AM on April 6, 1966, students at Westall High School in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton South observed a grey, saucer-shaped object descend from the sky and disappear behind a stand of pine trees in a paddock known as "The Grange." The object was accompanied by five small aircraft (later identified as likely Cessnas) that appeared to be following or circling it.

The Landing

Multiple witnesses reported the object landing briefly in the paddock before ascending rapidly at an angle that conventional aircraft could not achieve. Some students who ran to the landing site found a circular area of flattened grass. The grass in this circle was later described as having been swirled in a clockwise pattern.

The Cover-Up

What makes the Westall case particularly notable is the alleged suppression that followed. Students and teachers report being told by officials — including men in suits who arrived at the school — not to discuss what they had seen. The headmaster reportedly held an assembly warning students against talking about the incident. Despite this, over 200 witnesses have maintained their accounts over the decades.

Investigation

Australian researcher Shane Ryan spent over a decade investigating the Westall case, interviewing dozens of now-adult witnesses for his documentary "Westall '66: A Suburban UFO Mystery" (2010). The consistency of witness accounts after more than 40 years, combined with the large number of independent observers, makes this one of Australia's most compelling UFO cases.
