The Rendlesham Forest Incident
December 26-28, 1980 — Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England
Night One: December 26, 1980
In the early morning hours, USAF security personnel at RAF Woodbridge observed unusual lights descending into nearby Rendlesham Forest. Sergeant Jim Penniston and Airman John Burroughs were dispatched to investigate. Penniston reported encountering a triangular craft approximately 3 meters across, resting on the forest floor. He described touching the craft and feeling hieroglyphic-like inscriptions on its surface, which he later reproduced from memory.
Physical Evidence
The following morning, investigators found three depressions in the ground forming a triangular pattern where the craft had allegedly landed. Radiation readings taken at the site showed levels significantly above normal background radiation. Broken tree branches were found at the site, and scorch marks were observed on nearby trees.
Night Three: December 28
Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt led a larger investigation team into the forest on the third night. Halt recorded his observations on a handheld audio recorder, creating what became known as "The Halt Tape." On the recording, Halt describes a pulsating red light moving through the trees, beams of light descending from the sky, and objects moving at impossible speeds. This tape was later released through Freedom of Information requests.
The Halt Memo
Colonel Halt subsequently sent an official memorandum to the UK Ministry of Defence documenting the events, lending significant military credibility to the incident. This memo remains one of the most significant official documents in UFO history.
